In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, The Compassionate
In his bookThe Path to Allah, Most High Sidi unveils
more about the stations of the nafs and how the seeker may travel through the
nafs to return to the Essence of God. These "newer" teachings should
be combined with the teachings from the Music of the Soul (found
here) to help the student to know himself and know how he lives with his
Lord.
May Allah bless your travels.
The Nafs and Its Stations, from The
Path to Allah, Most High
The spiritual stations on the Sufi path are a response to the need of the times.
Whenever the soul (an-nafs) acquires an attribute, it also acquires
the name that designates it. When it befriends the passionate nafs and
submits to it, it is called inciting to evil (ammara bi'l-su)(Holy
Qur'an 12:53). When it submits to the dictates of Shari'ah and agrees to follow
the truth but still has some attraction to passional pleasures, it is called
reproachful (lawamma)(75:1-2). When this attraction
disappears and it acquires strength in opposing the passional nafs and
its attracted to the world of sanctity ('alam al-quds), also called
the world of divine matters or world of tanscendence, and begins to receive inspirations,
it is then called 'inspired' (mulhama)(91:7-8).
When its agitation quiets and the passional nafs lose all power over
it and forgets its pleasures, it is called serene (mutma'inna).
When it ascends higher than this and the spiritual stations themselves lose importance
in its sight and it becomes extinct to all its own wishes, it is called contented
(radiyya). When this state increases, it is named
'found pleasing' (mardiyya), this is, to both the
Haqq and to created beings (89:27). When it is commanded to return to created
beings to guide and to perfect them, it is called 'perfect' (kamala).
