These are the basic practices and
spiritual prescriptions for all Muslims and the Shadhuliyya under
the direct guidance of our guide,
Sidi Shaykh Muhammad Sa‘id al-Jamal ar-Rifa‘i ash-Shadhuli:
Pillars of Islam:
Shahadah
The declaration of faith -there is no god but God, and Muhammad
is His messenger- contains the seeker of truth in all his stations.
Wudu
Before ritual prayer, cleansing with pure water is required as
a sign of the servant washing in the water of the soul.
Adhan
At the times of the daily prayer, a member of the community makes
a loud, sweet call with his voice and the hearts return to their
Lord.
As-Salah (also commonly spelled Salat)
This is the prayer of the prophets and angels and a gift to the
seeker.
Zakah (or Zakat)
All things belong to God in heaven and earth. The seekers of God
return a portion of their income, purifying their wealth and
goods.
Ramadan
A month of fasting, prayer, and a merciful light that falls like
rain.
The Great Hajj
At least once in a lifetime for the one who is capable, God asks
us to visit the ancient House in Mecca.
Shadhuliyyah Practices
Al-Wird ash-Shadhuliyyah
The daily practice in our tariqa as given by the guide.
It is said that the wird is the tariqa, the Way.
Dhikr
The remembering of the Name of God.
Writing Sations
Drink from the knowledge of the Guide in the Stations of the Way.
Khalwah
Night vigil retreats.
Al-Wazifat al-Mashishiyyah
A spiritual ancestor of our tariqah has passed on a special prayer,
a deep prayer for the soul. The meanings of the Wazifa encompass
the path.
The Names of Allah
To Allah belong ninety-nine names which are revealed in the Holy
Qur'an and tradition.
Arabic Glossary
Arabic, the language of the Qur'an, has also been the language of
Sufi literature for many centuries and keeping technical terms in
Arabic sometimes prevents confusion from terms in other languages
with different connotations.
