Zawiyah, an Arabic word that literally means “corner,”
is a state of being in spiritual retreat, secluded from the outside
world. It is a time for the spiritual seeker to be face to face
with his or her Lord without distraction. This powerful retreat
consists of a simple prescription: reading, writing and contemplating
the teachings of God as transmitted by Sidi Shaykh Muhammad. While
in zawiyah people spend time remembering the Name of God (dhikr),
making repentance (tawba), reading and listening to the Qur’an,
and engaging in other spiritual practices.
Zawiyah has the unique ability to deepen each individual’s
personal connection with God in a way that is truly empowering.
The seeker is consistently guided to take all insights, emotions,
difficulties and revelations directly to God. In this process the
beloved finds that God is always there, giving His never-ending
love, mercy and compassion.The seeker surrenders to this love until,
God willing, he or she is swimming in the deep waters of unity with
God.
Whoever seeks Me, finds Me.
Whoever finds Me, knows Me.
Whoever knows Me, loves Me.
Whoever loves Me goes into greater love of Me.
Whoever has greater love of Me, I kill him.
Whomever I kill, I am responsible for his ransom. I am his ransom.
My slave continues to draw near Me through extra acts of affairs
until I become the hearing through which he hears,
the seeing through which he sees. (translation of Hadith Qudsi)
Zawiyah is highly recommended for both beginners and
more
experienced travelers on the Sufi path. There is no minimum amount
of time to spend in zawiyah. However, the more consecutive days
spent in zawiyah, the deeper one goes.
The Shadhiliyya Spiritual Retreat Center is the perfect place for
zawiyah, as the land here is very holy; this land knows how to walk
and heal people’s hearts. Sidi’s spirit is woven throughout
this land and he works deeply with everyone who comes here. Zawiyah
guests are housed in their own, private building. They have a special
room to use during the day for retreat with a beautiful garden.
Their meals are all
fresh, primarily organic and prepared with loving care.
The seeker’s constant state of renewal is deeply supported
by the Zawiyah Director, Sabura Tierney. Sabura is the mother and
midwife for those in zawiyah at the SSRC. She has a deep wisdom
and special understanding of the soul’s return to God that
enables her to
perceive what each heart needs precisely. Sabura is a faculty member
of The Jaffe Institute of Spiritual Healing and Sufism and a staff
healer for the West Coast Healing Intensive. She has helped
hundreds in her healing practice and she teaches around the country.
Sabura holds the rank of Master Teacher an-Naqib in the Shadhiliyya
Sufi Order of North America.
